History of Alchemy

Alchemy is popularly seen as the ancient Art of transforming base metal into gold. Originating in Ancient Egypt from the word ‘Khem’ and developed by the Greeks. ‘Khemia’ was the Greek word for Egypt and ‘Khumos’ fluids.

Alchemy was explored by the Toaist monks in China in their search for the secret of immortality. The monks pursued knowledge of both the outer and inner elixir of life. The former being minerals, plants etc, which were used to prolong life and the latter being exercise techniques such as Qigong to manipulate the chi or life force of the body.

Like China and Egypt, India developed Alchemy independently promoting external and internal purification of the body for good health and to prolong life.

Arabs brought Alchemy to the west in the 8th Century. Initially this was to Spain and then it spread to the rest of Europe. The Arabs believed that all metals were made of Mercury and Sulphur in varying proportions. Gold was seen as the perfect metal and the others less perfect. It was a popular idea that base metals were turned into Gold by means of a substance called The Philosophers Stone. The Stone was said to bring immortality. In China this was called The Pill Of Immortality.

By the 16th Century the Alchemists in Europe had split into 2 groups. Those who were interested in the metals and chemistry as we know it today and those who were looking at the more spiritual metaphysical side continuing the search for immortality and the transmuting of our inner base metal (physical body, thoughts, words and action) into gold (well-being, joy, ease and bliss)
